Medina

It would be hard to spot a Dane that was not acquainted with the familiar sound of Medina. Through the past years, she has become an integral part of the Danish (pop) music. The young singer from Århus made her debut in 2007 with the album “Tæt På” (Close), but it was not until her sophomore effort that she gained notice. “Velkommen til Medina” (Welcome to Medina) from 2009, the singles “Ensom” (Lonely) and “Kun For Mig” (Only for me) became massive hits across the country.

So far Medina has charted in Denmark with ten different singles and her success on the European scene is a testament to the wide appeal of her dance pop music. Much of her lyrical material is originally written in Danish and subsequently English versions are recorded for the international markets.

If you are not a member of Medina’s huge fan base yet, you might become one if you catch her in Tivoli. Her extensive tour in Denmark and Germany includes a stopover at the Gardens, where Medina will promote her third and latest album “For Altid” (Forever), which was released in September 2011.

D-A-D

Danish rock veterans D-A-D made yet another effective comeback last year in a career that spans over three decades and which has brought them to the epicenter of Danish rock. With the last album “DIC.NII.LAN.DAFT.ERD.ARK”, the band has gained immediate approval from fans and critics alike.

The new album is a return to the earlier years and the band’s more playful side. The title is a reference to the first version of their band name Disneyland After Dark - a name which the Disney Corporation took legal action against, and which they won. Luckily, the band was never forbidden to perform in amusement parks after dark and so they are back in Tivoli for the first time since 2003. In 2003 the rock band played the final concert of the season and took everyone by storm, so the bar is raised for another excellent show.

D-A-D will bring the “DIC.NII.LAN.DAFT.ERD.ARK” album on an intensive European tour starting in February so you can prepare yourself for a lean, mean rock machine, when we reach June and their gig in Tivoli. And surely we can expect some tracks from their extensive back catalogue.

The Cardigans

This Swedish pop combo hardly needs any introduction. The Cardigans, formed in the town of Jönköping, are among the highest selling bands in a long line of Swedish success stories. The band gained its first, international recognition in 1996 when their single “Lovefool” was included in the soundtrack to director Baz Luhrmann’s hit film “Romeo and Juliet”. And when “Gran Turismo” was released two years later, the world was at the band’s feet.

The band members of The Cardigans took time out in 2007 to focus on their solo projects, but have reconvened and rumor has it that they are working on new material. The focus this year, however, is on their prime work “Gran Turismo”. The Cardigans will exclusively perform five concerts worldwide, covering the entire album as one live set.

Their concert in Tivoli is a unique opportunity to catch the band at their peak and to experience one of the musical masterpieces of the 1990’ies first hand.

With a new, softer and more appealing sound, the album and the band climbed to the top of the charts and became critics’ favourites. The album was awarded six Danish Grammy Awards and subsequently the band has remained among the elite of Danish rock.

Their live performance in Tivoli is among only a handful of concerts the band will play in 2012 and they have chosen to center the show on their masterpiece album “The Good Life”. The award-winning album will be the center of the show and it will be performed in its entirety. Apart from “The Good Life”, the band will dedicate time to perform other favourites from their back catalogue.

Wolfmother

Have your world rocked by the Australian band Wolfmother which will by far deliver the most rock to the Open Air Stage in 2012. The band’s debut album from 2005 took their home country by storm with a musical style that was well founded in rock history with inspiration from legends such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. Wolfmother’s musical concept has since its birth given the band a huge fan base globally.

Wolfmother performed at the Roskilde Festival in 2006 and already then their stardom had been set with glowing adoration from Thom Yorke from Radiohead as well as Alice Cooper, who described the band’s sound as a mixture of a young Jimi Hendrix and Steppenwolf.

Last autumn Wolfmother commenced recording their new album, but the release was delayed until later this year. The concert in Tivoli will therefore be a great opportunity to hear the band’s new material live. All fans of hard and melodious stoner rock should not miss this concert.

Copenhagen Jazz Festival will according to tradition once again appear on the Friday me. The focus is on Miles Davis’ legendary album “Kind Of Blue” in particular. This milestone from 1959 in jazz history became known as the first “Modal” jazz album. With it Davis revolutionized the concepts of modern composing and thereby broke with the dominant bebop style which was popular during this period. The compositions on the album have since become evergreens and the album itself became a musical guideline for a long list of prominent jazz musicians in the years that followed.

The “Kind Of Blue” album will be performed in its entirety during this concert. Fronting the ensemble is famed pianist Niels Lan Doky and as a band leader, he has assembled an impressive lineup with the intention of recreating this legendary material in the spirit of its creator Miles Davis.

When Saints Go Machine + The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

We have been working overtime to find a proper replacement for Oh Land after she recently had to cancel her concert at Tivoli Gardens on 20th July. And we are proud to present not one, but two new names, namely The Asteroids Galaxy Tour & When Saints Go Machine on the 20th July.

First band on stage will be The Asteroids Galaxy Tour with the charismatic lead singer Mette Lindberg. The band was supposed to perform at Tivoli Gardens back in 2010, but were unable to do so due to the volcanic eruption on Iceland that caused havoc on European air traffic at that time. Therefore, we are extra happy to once again have the opportunity to present the band.

The second name on stage is the electro pop group from Copenhagen, When Saints Go Machine, who has had some major airplay with the track, Kelly.

This May, the band released their second studio album, and back in April the band was awarded the prestigious P3 prize. The boys from When Saints Go Machine always guarantee a solid performance and  surely a great experience awaits you, if you decide to visit Tivoli Gardens on Friday, 20th July.

Tim Christensen & The Damn Crystals

Tim Christensen spent most of last year touring with his former band Dizzy Mizz Lizzy, but since then he has returned to his successful solo career. However, he does not remain quite alone, because during the recording of his last solo album, he asked his backing band to take part in the creative process. This collaborative spirit has pushed the album in a more coherent and harmonic direction than earlier solo works from the heralded singer and guitarist.

The album and the backing band are titled The Damn Crystals and the musical direction has verged towards a harder sound to the delight of both the fans and critics.

Tim is a genuine regular at Tivoli and his performance will mark the fourth time Tim is a guest here, since his debut in 2001. His appearances have been hugely popular and with the success and fresh approach of the last album and hits such as “Right Next To The Right One” and the ballad “Love Is a Matter Of...”, this will be an evening with full stands alongside Tim and The Damn Crystals.
